Adam Lambert and the Partisan Divide

By Charlotte Laws  |  May 17, 2009

I am a greenhorn in the music world. If you gifted me an Ipod, I’d probably mistake it for a remote control. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift are names I have heard, but faces I could not place. I can’t operate a CD player and have always thought of concert-going as an activity other people do.

Until now. American Idol contestant Adam Lambert seems to have awakened my long lost music gene. It happened on a Tuesday in March when I coasted by the family room TV on my way to nab cashews from the kitchen. This male Elvira had cool, black nail polish, a Clark Gable confidence, an androgynous sex appeal and the ability to emote like I’ve never seen.

Heck, this is a concert I could attend, I thought.

With an alluring combination of pure talent, charisma, unpredictability and eccentricity, Lambert will no doubt go down in history as a superstar, not to mention American Idol’s greatest success story.

Commentators call Lambert a polarizing figure: you love him or you hate him. Could this stem largely from the partisan divide in America?

Lambert is a blue state. He is Hollywood, glamour and bigger than life. Using struts, vocal acrobatics, and bizarre song renditions, he sticks it to “the man” and orthodoxy. He upsets society, chastising manners and mores, much the way Elvis Presley did on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. Lambert is a comic book hero for those with an anti-establishment bent, such as 70’s children like me who learned early on to distrust government and convention.

His competitor, Kris Allen, is a red state. He is good ole boy from Arkansas who attends church and married his longtime sweetheart. On stage, he is as placid as a lake, even against the raging waterfall, Lambert. Allen is humble, casual and could live in Pleasantville. Lambert would be the Picasso of Pleasantville, upsetting the status quo.

In many cases, Lambert clearly transcends the red-blue divide, as evidenced by the statistics presented on “Dial Idol” and other websites that estimate the percentage of votes each competitor receives by state. But I have to wonder if some of his angry detractors are those with a deep-seated dislike for all things liberal and idiosyncratic. .

The controversy surrounding Lambert’s sexuality also plays into this theory. Bill O’Reilly, for example, thought it newsworthy to ask his Fox News viewers if they thought the singer was gay. Successful same-sex marriage initiatives are sweeping this country, and opponents may see Lambert as a poster boy for alternate lifestyles and as a threat to conservative values.

Could an Adam Lambert victory represent a new level of acceptance for difference? Would a Kris Allen win reinforce communitarian values and the familiar? Some may see this season’s contest as a battle of hope and change pitted against tradition and custom.

Win or lose, Lambert will be a music icon. And win or lose, I guess I’d better figure out what those shapes on the CD player mean.

Too bad that Adam Lambert`s fans all over the world (like me) couldn`t vote for him. Kriss is the new american idol but Adam is no doubt our worldwide idol. He will be sucessful in his career, I`m sure and I`m looking forward to his albuns coming out. Adam, you are a winner!!!!

Im a devout Christian and mother of two music-loving boys, and I must ask: What is wrong with America? Americas vote for Kris Allen, or Americas vote against Adam Lambert, seems to be a hate vote against the various sectors of society that Adam appears to stand for. People lost respect of the fact that American Idol is a singing talent competition open to all -- straight or gay, Christian or Jewish, clean-cut or flamboyant glam, etc. Voters forgot that it is not a popularity contest for class of persons neither an arena to battle for coalition leadership nor grounds to crusade for a religious revival. In Season 8, Kris demonstrated that he is a musician and an outstanding vocalist; but Adam consistently proved to be the amazingly innovative vocal artist and the versatile singer, gifted with a powerful voice. Adam deserved to win. Even Kris acknowledged this glaring truth in his Christian heart so that he openly asserted in public that Adam deserves this. Im sorry when he was unexpectedly handed the undeserved title. So many seconds passed before visibly bewildered Kris finally acquiesced to receive the undeserved crown, but only after Adam graciously approached to place a brotherly arm around his room mates shoulder in a gesture of encouragement. Hello, brothers and sisters -- American Idol is a singing contest and Adam Lambert is the real winner! I should also ask: What is wrong with Fox TVs American Idol show that they allow such warped controversies and divisiveness to occur at a time like this in history?

The first time I saw Adam in one of the recaps of AI auditions - he got me interested in the show already. He got this mysterious, emo looks and cool hairstyle. I wasn't able to catch his name yet because everytime I get to watch AI I'm nearing the end of the show because I didn't know the schedule, and it was only merely seconds that his face is shown. Then one evening I got lucky and saw him perform Black Or White. Since then I've been tunning in to see him every week.
He's awesome! I love him

Great article and right on the money. Adam is something special and we are all fortunate to witness his rise to stardom. He has worked hard and deserves to win. Unfortunately, America still has to come a long way - unlike so many other countries who have long evolved from bigotry and hatred and know how to reward true talent. Go Adam - you've had my votes from day 1.

Adam Lambert is the hardest working idol in the history of AI. During audition, he said that this is his BIG chance. He wants to be fearless and he wants go out there and give us a show each week. And each week, we saw the Adam Lambert's show. He carefully planned the lighting effects, costume, make-up, props, his entrance, etc. at each show. How can we repay Adam Lambert for giving us a free well-planned show instead of a karaoke show? We can return his hard work by voting non-stop for him for 4 hours tonight. Vote for Adam.

I absolutely adore Adam Lambert!! There are many many of us 50-something women who have completely lost it -- spend my days playing his downloaded songs and scouring the internet, blogging about him. Adam is not only blessed with incredible God-given talent, he has spent his entire life developing his amazing vocal and performing skills. I believe he is touching so many people not only with his voice, but his sweet, humble, adorable personality. (And off-the-charts sex appeal) He wants to win -- he deserves to win -- WE NEED TO VOTE FOR ADAM ALL 4 HOURS ON TUESDAY!!! WE LOVE YOU ADAM!!!! Glambert #2397

I have watched idol off and on through the years and this year was off. I never buy the music and have found myself bored to death with what comes off the show. So last week I was scanning youtube for Susan Boyle and found Adam Lamberts Whole Lotta Lovin. Okay, I have heard the buzz about him and figured he was just another cookie cutter, bland performer that would sell his cool mill and then fade away. I watched the video and I sat there transfixed thinking to myself what the hell was that? I played it again and again and again. Since then I have downloaded every performance he has on ITunes and watched them all several to a million times. Wow! Okay, I will confess to being a 41 year old, married woman with a mundane existence that has now read every article about this kid, (very nice article by the way). So here goes why I am obsessed Adam Lambert makes me feel good! It doesnt matter what he does in the bedroom - what matters is what he does on that stage or any other stage. The kid is magical! Dont care if he wins! I know I know, I am just afraid that they wont allow him to be Adam, and who he is is what makes him the full package of voice, charisma, good looks, bad boy angst and elvis-esque sexuality. He has IT; dont ask me what it is because if we could define and package it we would all have it. He is one of the special ones. He rocked my world and I am holding my breath in anticipation for what comes next.

I am surely going to have Adam Lambert withdrawals once AI is over. I seriously think if they came up with some type of variety show that Adam would star in every week they could make a fortune. Even the thought of not seeing him perform every week almost hurts. It is what I look forward to each and every week. Win or not he IS THE AMERICAN IDOL FOR SEASON 8!!!!!

Found some clips of him online, and not only was his singing different than most pop singers, he reeks of coolness as well as charming. I don't follow AI much less watch TV. The 1st time I learned of Adam Lambert was in Times magazine article making a big deal about how he might be eliminated in Top 3 for being "different" yet the most talented. Despite being the best singer and most entertaining, I fear he may lose. Out of 88 million, only 1 million seperated the winners from the loser in the top 3. Also I believe most of Danny's fan will side with Kris. Sure, Adam may receive great commercial success even if he lose, but someone like him winning AI has a far greater meaning.

I wish I knew why some people mix politics into making Adam the American Idol or who he sleeps with. My god this is a singing contest folks and there never has been someone like Adam. He will be huge all over the world even if they elect country bumkin Kris who will sing at country fairs.
He is a nice young man, don't get me wrong, but he is no Idol.

Adam Lamberr HAS to WIN. So American fans please vote harder for us. (I'll try to vote too.) ALSO. I don't get why people are okay with Adam not winning. He's already a winner? We still have a few days to go people. HE HAS TO WIN, because first of all, he's WORKED HARD for it -- HE DESERVES TO WIN. And he needs the promotion as a winner so that he can be marketed in the best way possible. He's the best singer, hands down, but WE NEED TO BRING HIM TO THE TOP! VOTE FOR ADAM! I find Adam Lambert mesmerizing. He is an absolutely amazing talent with that "it" factor that just draws people in. A lot of people have complained that they don't want a gay person to be an American Idol. I have to disagree. What better role model for our children than a man who believes in himself and doesn't care what others think. He is true to himself, kind, humble and gives back to his community. That is someone I want my children to emulate.

Adam woke me up musically: thanks to him challenging us out of our comfort zones I have listened Led Zeppelin et al. for the first time. His talent is incredible. Add to that his genuine, honest, nice character and you can't help but to love him. Even in his homecoming videos form the net (those that local people filmed) you can see how even smallest children just go and hug him, fearlessly. Some want to present him as "devil" or "dark" contestant, but children can sense his true self even if some adults can't see past his eyeliner. Adam challeneges me/us and gives us wonderful music. I can't wait to see what he does in years to come.

Dear Editor
That flaming endorsement your fir Dr posted would suggest that you are I fact endorsing Adam Lambert. I went through my first post many times looking for supposed swear words and of course there wasnt any at all. I tried another post and no matter what I did I was rejected for one reason or another, so to say that comments or people I this case are not censored is disingenuous wouldnt you say? If youre not smart enough to know how your own fiilter functions maybe you shouldnt be in your current position. And dear CM in San Diego, as you put it (To promote religion via Kris is just sick and discriminatory). You cant be serious, merely showing his background as they did with the other contestants is sick and discriminating because he attends church and has religion? That itself is sick and discriminatory. I wouldnt even have an opinion on this if youre fair Dr had not dragged all of this political baggage into her slobbering endorsement for Adam. I sent my original post to your administrator, try reading it and you tell me where the objectionable words are and then learn how to run your own web-site!

On grounds of talent alone, Mr Lambert is in a league of his own. His vocal pyrotechnics eclipse all others. His star power adds to that eclipse. Should Mr Lambert 'lose', it will prove a Pyrhhic victory for homophobes everywhere.

Like the extraordinary film 'Brokeback Mountain', Mr Lambert's success heralds a new hope for American decency. "Live and lives' remains our highest self-definition.

His career has already taken off to a pop stratosphere. And he did it on talent. Sheer talent. Unique talent. Not bad. Still in doubt? Please watch this, and be prepared to be breathlessly, admiringly stunned.

Putting my two cents worth. I am so happy that I have seen many positive comments. This is my first time being a fan of an artist and I am looking at a lifelong commitment of my fascination with Adam Lambert. Wishing him all the best in his post idol career and will continue to support him as a fan.

I hope that he will win the title as he has been the most consistent in performing for the audience while at the same time setting the bar higher for himself.

Im a right wing, Republican grandmother, in love with Adam Lambert.I never dreamed when I started to watch Season 8 of AI I would become addicted to a contestant, but I have. My husband watched the show for the first time when Adam did Ring of Fire. He got hooked too.I sit at my computer for hours looking up Adam news. I bought an Ipod so I can download his music. I plan to drive 250 miles for the AI Tour just to see Adam. I have a lot of respect for him because he has been so humble, greatful, well mannered, honest and sincere from the start. I also want to thank him for all the entertainment he has provided and will for years to come. The only sad thing is, the show is almost over and not seeing him every week is going to be tough. He's a beautiful singer with a beautiful face and smile and personality to match. Easy to get addicted, impossible to forget.

Yes, yes, yes, BUT Adam & Kris are great friends! They are very supportive of each other. Kris has even sported a black fingernail polished thumb. So what does this say? Well, that's easy. We can all be friends-sheesh! Everyone should look to Adam & Kris as inspiration, not to divide us further. Kris clearly is not angry at or scared of Adam. Nor should any other red-stater. This is an old yarn. Adam & Kris aren't playing by the rules-they are friends and highly respectful of each other. A lesson for us all, I say.

I totally AGREE with the author above. I was only into listening easy and nice songs by nice singers until ADAM LAMBERT BOMBED me. These few weeks - I have learnt much more about music than all my years till now.
I'm going to use Vbuzzer. I heard it works. But I hope this would not jeoparise Americans voting as I really wants to help to make Adam win. I have read of Americans going to vote against him out of spite. It is sad that this feeling prevails in your country as this is a talent contest. Why must politics and others come in?
Why must I bother to vote? Because I really love the man and you all should be proud of your homegrown talent. I mean there are many good singers, but to have that charisma and personality s well, is really rare.

Another middle-aged married woman here spending Sunday evening combing the internet in search of Adam Lambert articles. He is by far the most talented and exciting singer/performer on AI. He does not need to win the title - he'll be a star regardless, but I will vote for him until my fingers bleed!

Today our President spoke at Notre Dame concerning another controversial topic. He urged Americans to continue their debate with "open hearts, open minds and fair-minded words". I am hoping Americans keep that sentiment in mind when they vote on Tuesday to decide which finalist deserves a recording contract and to headline the American Idol concerts. The show is called "American Idol: The Search for a Superstar". Based on consistently stellar performances all season and an "It" factor that can't be explained...there is one true Superstar on that stage and his name is Adam Lambert.

Adam Lambert sang his heart out, and I remember every song he sang. Loved it. I am 100% a Lambert fan, even though I liked Danny Gokey at the beginning. Somehow, Chris....forgettable. He reminds me of a lawn gnome.

Go to itunes, take out your credit card and download. Being proud of technical ignorance in this day and age is defensive ignorance like bigotry (but not as insidious). I have friends that are in their 80's that can do it. Trust me, there is nothing to be "skerd" of. You will be so happy you did it. You can watch and listen to Adam over and over. Make sure that you down load both the performance and studio versions. they are different. It is as if he got bored doing it the same way twice.

I live in Florida...a state with a Republican Governor for the past 10 years that finally went Blue for Obama this year after being solidly Red for the past 8. Practically everyone I know is supporting Adam Lambert for American Idol. It's a singing/talent contest looking for a Superstar performer and no one else even comes close to Adam. I could care less about his personal life, religion, etc. I care about his talent and the fact he deserves to win more than anyone else. I'll be voting 4 hours Tuesday night, calling and texting for Adam to win! If we can elect Obama to the White House we can select Adam for American Idol!

What a fantastic, well-written article. I am a journalist in Toronto and am impressed, not just by your writing, but by your analysis and support of Adam. I just want to add: Change for the sake of change isn't always good. Change for the better and because there is a deserving reason is why people should vote Adam Lambert as the next American Idol. He has awakened the AI dead, stirred emotions, given people a reason to love Idol again. I just love him! PLEASE VOTE FOR ADAM!

It's ADAM LAMBERT all the way for me like it's been from day one. He has the total package to be the winner of IDOL. Like you, Charlotte, I grew up listening to music in the 70's and 80's. My fave bands were Led Zep, Aerosmith and KISS who I met in '76 and was lucky enough to have the chance to see them as real people, not the devil-whorsiphers people tried to claim that they were cuz of their name KISS supposedly standing for Knights In Satan's Service. Those four guys wore black nail polish, face makeup, platform shoes and costumes onstage and were proud of it. ADAM has his own style and I love it. I've watched IDOL off and on for a couple of years but last year was the first time that I actually watched it from beginning to end. I had 2 faves, David Cook and Michael Johns. We know what happened to both...Michael was voted off cuz people thought he was safe and David C won. We need to vote for ADAM and yes I'll vote the entire four hours just like I have voted constantly for him each week. You rock Adam! Keep on giving us your heart and soul as you sing and we'll give our love back to you!

I have been a fan of American Idol from day 1. I have to say that Simon Cowell, has taught all of us well. Now, that is someone you hate or love. He is my man and mentor. Adam Lambert, is the winner hands down however, the vote's have no representation of politics. I am a Christian and Adam is far beyond any music note and also the artist who has the presence, package and people that like all music will enjoy. Taylor Hicks, sang an Elvis tune, and we were all fooled!

I found your excellent article stalking the internet for more info on Adam and couldn't agree more! I'm 40-something woman who loathed American Idol until, like you, I walked through the living room while a family member was watching Adam's performance of Mad World. Being an ex-80's new wave kid, I turned my head toward the TV so fast when I heard him sing I nearly gave myself whiplash! Ever since I have been transfixed by his great talent and I've been obsessed with seeking out as much as I can about him. If everyone who reads this hasn't already, I'd highly recommend checking out some of his past performances on You Tube, particularly "Dust in the Wind' and his Brigadoon "Come to me, bend to me" performance at age 22, AMAZING!! If Adam doesn't win it will truly be a sin. But win AI or not, he is surely to have a long, prosperous career and I look forward to being along for the ride!!

I will have to say that American Idol has saved the BEST for last. There will be one more season and the show will be history. There will not be another person to top Adam Lambert. People will get bored real fast next year because they will be expecting someone to come along that is equal or better than him and there will not be anyone that comes close. Honestly when I heard that AI said that David Cook was going to be on the show I had to ask my daughter who is David Cook. This year though I got hooked when Adam sang "Ring of Fire". I have never been a fan of any singer until Adam came along. He truly is my "American Idol"!!!

I've been hooked from day one and I know it's not just his singing talent. He has that magnetic appeal of androgyny. Freddie had it, Chrissie Hynde has it. Many other "stars" have it. Androgenous appeal is freeing for the rest of us who are stuck in our little gender corners: it's like seeing someone who symbolizes freedom from being boxed in by the polarity game. Pure charisma to some, scary as hell to others. It's great.

I don't buy the Red/Blue state argument. I've joined a couple of Adam's fan clubs (Lamb Skanks & Glamberts) and we are the world - all countries, states, religions, races, ages, orientation, political views. We don't agree on everything - even the gay issue.

However, we're all excited about Adam Lambert!

Kris is talented, a nice kid. He'll get a record out of the deal.

Adam is a star - the whole package, incredible vocal range, creativity, sex appeal, stage presence, self awareness. He's changed AI, and many fans forever.

America will get it right and vote Adam as the next American Idol.

Adam is the ONE!

CAST 100 MILLION VOTES FOR ADAM.

As an openly gay man who grew up in an extremely conservative farming community, and now lives in an extremely liberal city...I am voting for Kris Allen. So are most of the gay men that I know. It's not about politics, or sexual orientation. We are voting for him because we prefer his simpler style to Adam's theatrics. This is not to deny Adam's talent...there's no question about that. What this boils down to is this: whose style do you prefer? I like both contestants for different reasons...but for me, it's Kris Allen who gets my vote. Please, let's not make this about sexual orientation v. religion...or red state v. blue state.

Charlotte, Loved your article! Personally, I am tired of the media appearing to apologize for Adam's unbelievable talent. Idol Tonight and Idol Wrap both seem determined to minimize their comments and praise of him in order to put in good words for the other contentants in order to make this a contest. Adam Lambert is probably one of the finest entertainers to come along in years - he goes out there and just lays it all out for you. I love the fact that he seems to genuinely enjoy what he's doing. I have, for the first time since watching Idol, downloaded every song of his that I can get my hands on. I don't believe that he has to win this week, but I for one would love to see him do it because he has truly earned it!

I, too, really liked this article, and feel the same way. I've never really watched Idol in the past, but this year I actually found myself looking forward to Tuesday nights, just so I could see/hear Adam, and what he was going to do. I felt like I was getting a "free" concert each week, one that I would actually consider paying for (and I never go to concerts). I think he is incredibly talented, and he stirred something in me that I almost never feel, and didn't expect to feel from American Idol. I'm not sure he is going to win (there are lots of people - my folks included - who can't stand him - and Kris is a nice, wholesome counter-balance to Adam), but it should be interesting. At the very least, it is nice to see someone (Adam) who is capable of making you feel that wonder and excitement that a really talented person can evoke. Doesn't happen often.

As a conservative practicing moslem who love Adam for his amazing talent and personality, I'm surprised how bigoted many americans are when it comes to gay issue.
Those homophobes would do anything to stop him being American Idol. But at this stage, Adam does not need American Idol. He is already world Idol. Adam international fans get together every tuesday and wednesday nights in chat forum while watching the live streaming Idol, no matter how different their time zones are. Some of us even try our best to vote for Adam from our countries. Only real superstar can create such loyal fans.

I liked how this article echoed my own thoughts about Adam Lambert, who I already think of in terms of super-stardom. He may be more favored outside of mid-western states, which may lean the most towards country music, anyway. A child of the '60's and lover of rock music, I cherish individuality and admire uniqueness. If you combine those two characteristics with talent and good looks, you've got Adam Lambert. Can't wait to see him rock out in person and play his music in my car.

Unidentified Flying Alien

1:25pm on Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Oye Vey All OF YOU!

Adam is a person, an Earthling. He is not from the Planet Jew, nor the Planet Christian, nor the Planet Muslim. He is from Earth, the same place as all of you.

I am a unidentified flying alien who has hitched a ride in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle. My unidentified flying plant is an unpleasent place to live. All we do is argue.

I have come to Earth to learn about your Planet. We want to know if Earth is a better place to live. Where are your origins? I have questions. My Guidebook says Earthlings started somewhere down there, down on one of these brown and green patches, didn't you? My Guidebook also says from the beginning, Jews and Arabs were cousins... now that is family. Judging from the size of your Planet, close family...

Part II says that that the Christiandom was built from admiration of an Israelite, a Jew... and that makes all of you a bigger family. Correct me if I am wrong.

I don't understand why it matters what religion Adam is. Life forms in my unidentified flying planet do not sing, they plunk around looking for vocal emanation that can reach a 4 octive range, hit high C's, E's, F's and maybe even G force with Pythagorean enlightenment.

Sooo... the search is on. I have been wearing my audio implants and channeling Adam singing in Hebrew, Adam singing Broadway, Adam singing Rock... and that Earthling really can sing! Why does it make a difference what patch of Philosophy has been generated in his genes? My take is just that Adam is an Earthling that REALLY CAN SING... You are fortunate that you have such a treasure. I think Lambert Universal Surround Sound is what our habitat needs. Earthlings, Vote for Adam!

Excellent article. I can't beleive that people are still so hung up on a persons sexuality. I wish they would educate themselves. There are straight and there are gay and then there is a broad spectrum of sexuality in between. I have also fell under Adam's spell. He is without a doubt the best contestant American Idol ever had, if he doesn't win its because of closed minded people, which saddens me to no end. Good luck Adam I will be voting my fingers off Tuesday night. Win of lose your are OUR AMERICAN IDOL, NO MAKE THAT OUR INTERNATIONAL IDOL. Love you.

You know this whole red state vs. blue state comparisons with Adam and Kris really don't work. I know a lot of Republican friends in their 20s to their 70s who LOVE Adam and are voting for him. Moms, dads, granmothers, etc. His immense talents cross over many more political, socio-economic barriers than you think. I'm a 40 year old GOPer and LOVE the dude. I'm voting for him because he is the BEST singer Idol has ever had. I have never voted for any contestant before. I know he is gay, but it doesn't matter. He oozes sexuality, raw emotion, glam rock. I will be voting the whole time for him Tuesday and I look forward to him winning because he is an amazing singer. I also look forward to him busting stereotypes about who supports him. His support is deeper and braoder than this article would indicate.

If Kris wins, it will just mean that little girls have far too much access to technology these days. I won't even say teenagers because every teenager I know likes Adam and thinks Kris is boring.

Kris' march to the final has all been down to the multi-voting software they are using. They even advertise the fact that they are using it on the front page of his site. How clever of them ..... not! He may even win because of it. When it comes to releasing a record though, are they going to buy more than one copy of it? I doubt it. Then the truth will out and it will poor Kris who pays with his contract.

it matters little if adam wins idol or not - i wish it for him since he wants and most certainly deserves it - BUT he will be a superstar, regardless.

i'd much rather read an insightful article ruminating on the current state of the music industry... that an artist of adam's caliber is reduced to competing in a televised talent contest in order to gain exposure. that's what's disgraceful.

and politicizing the competition with the whole blue state red state is total b.s., music is universal. it has no borders.

Adam should be judged on his talent, not his private life. He is an entertainer. So many singers with big shows can't actually sing. Adam does both. Judge him on his merits. It's been a long time since there has been such an exciting performer and I for one will vote! I wish everyone would go back to making it a singing contest and not a political contest.

Who cares what his personal preference is, he is simply the most talented of the two contestants left, the most charasmatic, has the most stage presence, and the most memorable...whether you love him or not, you certainly remember him. Kris seems very nice, and has a nice voice, but I never remember what he did the next day. Kudos to all of them for having the courage to put themselves out there for judgement.

Greetings from Jeff Hall, editor of Westside Today.

I find it fascinating that so many of you are finding this American Idol story and commenting on it.

For the record, we are completely neutral in this "Who should win American Idol and why?" issue.

And we are NOT censoring comments.

The way our website works, some posts HAVE been blocked, automatically, because of language used.

I'm not smart enough to know exactly how this works, but it's OK with me. There's no reason this debate can't be conducted in a civil and polite manner.

Keep those cards and letters coming -- but keep it clean, please! Thanks.

Why have an agenda? It's just a TV show. It can inspire watchers to be apathetic or active. Adam's presence has created a lot of avtivity, watching, listening, voting, texting, talking, reading, calling, commenting, awaiting and buying. He has been at this a long time and knows how to work the stage. He can stun us with his talent and ability. He sings from the heart and touches our soul. He will have longevity in the business. Good old Kris will last til next season when another cute guy with a guitar comes along.

It really makes me mad that this thing is turning to religion and sexuality. Adam Lambert deserves to win no question about it. To promote religion via Kris is just sick and discriminatory. Who cares who's straight or gay! What the heck does it matter if you're voting on talent and singing ability? Kris is boring and there's nothing to him. Oh sure he might be a nice guy but come on...Is he really that talented. No, he can't stand up to Adam Lambert at all. Allison should have been in the second slot because of talent! You want to vote based on religion and discriminatory factors, we can do that!!

Enjoyed your article and I do think this became more than a singing contest way back at the beginning. The press and Idol have used Adam to garner more money and viewers. I hope they are paying him some fraction of all the money they are making. Adam is just some mothers son who is trying to find his way in this world. He has been working 17 years to get where he is, and then he has to deal with all the other garbage that has nothing to do with his singing ability. I hate the whole good boy/bad boy spin on this contest. Adam has worked hard, he is humble, he wants to inspire others and he is a giant talent. That Voice and his stage presence are mesmerizing, you just can't look away. Lets consider his talent and not his personal life in this contest.
RE; Hong Kong Dial Idol represent approximately 100,000 votes and very small slice of that overall 88 million votes which came in. Check your facts Hong Kong. Adam took California and Michigan last week. It was Kris who lost his home state. If you are going to quote Dial Idol make sure you get your facts and figures straight

What this article says could very be right. It says that the very angry people who seem to hate Adam so much are potentially angry about him being "out there,", in make up , mixing it up. The author is not saying the singers' bases are red states and blue states. In fact, she says Adam gets support across the political divide. But I agree that his flamboyance and possible gayness may be what some conservatives (probably mostly men) really hate.

This website is such a farce! Any comment with real substance is rejected for "swearing" when there is none. There is no "partisan divide" Its just you pushing your repugnant views on the rest of normal America. Lambert's voice is shrill and monotonous and you obviously have a problems with Christians and normal relationships and this site is configured to censor any real opposition to your ultra-left wing rant. If this post gets through your pro-liberal filter try posting the one you censored 3 times for swearing when there wasn't any. Lambert is a flash in the pan and doesn't deserve to win just because you think it's good to shake things up with some mo singer with half the talent that either Danny Goky or Kris Allen have. Your editorial? is offensive divisive and clearly meant to promote your leftie pro-mo agenda.

How can Adam not be the next American Idol? If it was the World Idol, he would win. He has awakened music lovers all over the world. He has gotten people to vote who have never even watched the show and now wont miss it because of him. He has drawn more attention than anyone who has ever been on the show and has already made the cover of a magazine. All of it because he has extraordinary talent that the public is anxiously waiting to see more of. And he has been a class act the whole time.I hope Adam is ready for the super stardom he has earned and deserves. It is waiting right around the corner for him. This should never be political. Its about talent and the "it" factor that cant be explained. Kris is a very nice, talented guy but cant begin to compare to Adam's starpower and genius. Put all politics aside and vote for Adam, the true Idol.

I am really surprised this season has become not just about finding a superstar singer and has become a political movement. Everywhere I go people are talking about Adam Lambert and American Idol. I have never watched American Idol but when I heard him on the tv I had to run over and see who it was. Music is something I turn on when driving into work. I didn't own any records. But after hearing him only once it made me turn my tv on again next week to hear him again. Now I have bought my first Ipod shuffle thingy. I was taught by my lawn boy how to download itunes to the shuffle box. I bought a cd player for my car and because of the music Adam Lambert has sung on tv I now have purchased the cds of the artist he has sung. I can't wait for his first CD to come out and he is one entertaining artist. I'll go to an Adam Lambert concert, I'd even plan a road trip to drive to a state hosting him. The Kris Allen boy seems like a nice youngster but he doesn't capture or entrance me like Adam Lambert does. There is a huge difference between the Adam Lambert who has the "it" factor and Kris Allen who is there. Sure Kris Allen can play 4 instruments, but this is a singing competition. I don't care who is what sexually that has nothing to do with a singing competition. Folks who don't want to vote for someone who is neither out nor pushing the gay or bisexuality in people's faces are ignorant, it is a singing competition. The best artist is clear to me and I hadn't been into music since dang, high school. Kris Allen doesn't re-awaken my love for music. Kris Allen doesn't make me forget my recession woes. I lost my husband a year ago and listen to Adam Lambert sing, "If I can't have you" made me think he totally could understand how much heartbreak I went through. None of Kris Allen songs have moved me emotionally. Adam Lambert will not only be (I predict) the biggest American Idol they have ever had he will be able to do movies like Twilight, etc. Adam Lambert is a money maker waiting to happen and he deserves to win American Idol. All of this Kris Allen push has pushed me to vote this Tuesday. My painter showed me how it works and so I am armed and ready with my phone, pad and pen. I'm sure lots of other folks out here will ensure the right singer wins and that is not Kris Allen. Well, what do you know...I must be a "Glambert" afterall.

I livein the possibly the "reddest" state in the nation, in the heart of the mid-South, the buckle of the bible belt, but I also live in "the home of the blues", near "the Crossroad" in Elvis' hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi. When it comes to music there are no red states, no blue states, there is just the United States. Yes, Kris Allen is from this region and has lots of fans. But so does Adam Lambert. So to all my friends in the Blue states, make sure you vote for Adam; but my bet is Adam has a lot more support in the red states than you can even imagine. Adam FTW

So, a lot of his international fans have been voting for him especially the last few weeks via GIZMO5 (FREE) to ensure his win. Adam Lambert 'global movement' can always use more votes from the rest of the world, so do VOTE as it's not everyday we get to see an extraordinary talent.

Enjoyed the article and think it is very well articulated. I think Adam can transcend the red/blue camp theory because of his talent and he seems like such a terrific guy...saying kind/encouraging words about his fellow contestants, always being gracious when accepting judges input and acknowledging/praising the band. I totally agree that Adam is THE most talented, charismatic, mesmerizing, energizing and apparently genuinely nice entertainer ever. He is a combination of the greats...Elvis, the Beatles, Prince and others. I think he is actually more appealing because, as talented as he is, he is humble. A rare element in his wide-spread appeal is that he is the type star who is someone we can all see ourselves being best friends with!! I LOVE his interpretation of songs. He could re-sing all the great songs from any generation and infuse a sexy, new and exciting vibe to it. He is so the total package. I do think Kris is talented, too; different genre..more a James Taylor kinda guy. I think it is so cool that they appear to be friends. That relationship between Adam, Kris and Allison is one of the best parts of this competition. Danny was divisive. GO ADAM! I hope you win, however, in my mind you already have. I can't wait to buy your CD's and see you in concert. We are going to miss our weekly "dose" of Adam. We got a "whole lotta love" for you, Adam!

Agree with your POV Charlotte 100%. Been reading other blogs and other people are really very harsh with Adam and read it in Idolator (i think) that they didn't post some blogs coz there really homophobic/hurtful comment. I wonder how people can be judging others because of sexual orientation. Most especially when the US is a first world country with supposedly very active "gay rights movement" and "gay marriages". Sad that some would deny their bigotry by saying "he is just too shrilly for me, too woman scream, he said this instead of this etc...). Of course i understand that we have freedom of speech so anybody can say anything. It saddens me that people don't see true talents because of their biases. Win or Lose, Adam lambert is the best there is. The only reason for me to watch idol. I hope he win American Idol and change the franchise forever.

WhWhat really amazes me is that Adam has a lot of fans outside of the US. They seem to really like him. It is nice to know.

Sadly, American Idol is a voting reality show. Winning is not based on talent alone. So question is will the red state wake up and accept change? Accept progress? Or will conservatism win? How can awaken the red state?

This will further reinforce our belief that America is now starting to accept change. First black president, first gay (possible) american idol.

What really amazes me is that Adam (vs. other contestants) has a lot of fans outside of the US. They seem to really like him and understands him. Maybe it is because he represents less of the conservative america which the global populace are not fond of. It is nice to know that he is appreciated.

Gay or not gay. I think Adam Lambert not only could be, but IS a strong role model for today's youth. To see him interact with his fans, especially when he returned home to San Diego, you can see the genuine gratitude in his heart. Gay or not gay, and whether he wins or doesn't win (a travesty if the latter is to occur), I look forward to buying his CD when it's released. I'm sure it'll be rockin', and I'll enjoy it every bit as much as I have Blake Lewis' (Season 6 runner up). My only question to the Season 8 Finale coming up this week is, "How did that idiot Kris Allen make it to the finals over Danny Gokey? Gokey had talent. Allen's just a hack!"

Nice article. I do think Adam symbolizes hope and change. He is unqiue and dares to be different. I like him because of his attitude and determination to reach a goal. I commend his braveness in being true to himself. I do hope that he wins to show that America do reward and encourage people to excel. I really felt disgusted when Los Angeles Times wrote an article insinuating that Allen may have a longer career than Adam because other people might be turned off by Adam's sexuality. Of all states, California (a democratic state!) still has an issue on sexuality? I felt betrayed because California should be supporting their homegrown boy as Allen has the full support of his town.

An intelligent and thoughtful article. Lambert - a sensational talent - will be an Icon for this and the next several decades. It remains to be seen though whether the red states can be dragged kicking and screaming gay epithets into the future. I suspect Kris will win. Charlotte, I really enjoyed reading your article. I wonder if your 'cashew night' was the night Adam Lambert sang Tracks of my Tears? That was the night he hooked me in - a friend of mine was hooked in the same way when she heard him sing Mad World as she was passing the tv. After his corageous near stellar performances every week, and the way in which he pushes the boundaries week after week, I was gobsmacked to hear that only 1 million votes separated him and Kris. Maybe they meant Kris and Danny?? As another site said, 'Nice try, Idol.' I guess megabucks will roll into the producers, advertisers and sponsors this week! But regardless, Adam is a unique and talented man who deserves to win the title, as he so wants!
