We are proud to welcome Roshi Joan Halifax in this special weekend to celebrate Against the Stream's 4th Anniversary. Roshi Joan will talk about taking spirituality from the monastery into the streets as we live a practice of Engaged Buddhism which includes fierce compassion, radical wisdom and fearlessness.

ALTARS IN THE STREETS: Occupy the Heart
In this talk, Roshi Joan Halifax will explore with us a spirituality that is brought from the monastery to the world. Through work in the prison system and with dying people, social and political activism, and a commitment to environmental responsibility, she looks at three aspects of spirituality: a spirituality of social action addressing structural violence, a spirituality of service addressing direct and indirect suffering, and a spirituality of conscience and conscientiousness. These three aspects are seen as one from a Buddhist perspective where mutuality is the base of our relationship with the world. There will be time for questions and discussion.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama said: Compassion is not a luxury; it is a necessity for the humanity to survive. This daylong explores fierce compassion, radical wisdom, and fearlessness in today’s world. It includes teachings, practices, and research on the mental qualities that make it possible for us encounter the world bravely.
Both these events are priced on a sliding scale. Please pay at the highest end you can afford to help support our centers. Anything you pay above the lowest amount is a tax-deductible donation. You will also have the opportunity to offer dana to the teacher.

Roshi Joan Halifax is a Buddhist teacher, Zen priest, anthropologist, and author. She is Founder, Abbot, and Head Teacher of Upaya Zen Center, a Buddhist monastery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has worked in the area of death and dying for over thirty years and is Director of the Project on Being with Dying.
A Founding Teacher of the Zen Peacemaker Order, her work and practice for more than three decades has focused on engaged Buddhism. Roshi Joan is Founder and Director of the Upaya Prison Project that develops programs on meditation for prisoners. She is founder of the Ojai Foundation, was an Honorary Research Fellow at Harvard University, and has taught in many universities, monasteries, and medical centers around the world.
