Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Magnet High School Celebrates Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital’s Centennial Year

Ms. Santana’s high school seniors are still hard at work at their desks finishing a very special art project in celebration of Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital’s (LAOH) centennial year. These students at Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Magnet High School (OHMMHS) are molding and decorating 100 unique casts. Each cast, as each student, tells a story of the impact LAOH has made on the Los Angeles community and of hope renewed.
The project has been playfully dubbed the “Supporting Cast” project, and symbolizes the role students of Orthopaedic Medical Magnet High School play in the supporting cast of children’s orthopaedic health.
LAOH provides care for children with congenital and acquired orthopaedic disorders, conditions, and injuries regardless of their families’ ability to pay and is commited to education with a 50 year history of residency programs and post-residency fellowships in conjunction with major medical schools in Southern California and its more recent affiliation with LAUSD through Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Magnet High School, LAOH is a leader in not only orthopaedic medical care but in the creation of future healthcare providers.
Over 850 students with a demonstrated interest in medical health and scholastic achievements in science currently attend Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Magnet High School, a groundbreaking partnership between LAOH and LAUSD. Recently ranked in the top 6 of schools by US News and World Report, this LAUSD magnet high school in downtown Los Angeles provides students with a medically enhanced curriculum and exposure to the full spectrum of medical careers.
For seniors, the Supporting Cast project seems to be a welcome opportunity to reflect on what Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Magnet High School and Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital have given them, and how they plan to use their unique educational experiences to give back in the future.

Some very big names in this field have in the past been known to fire or transfer doctors who prescribe expensive drugs in their (HMO) clinics. Now what they've done is computerize their pharmacies and a doctor can only prescribe what is in the system. And the big shots then get to decide what to put in the system. So even if a doctor knows a certain drug could really be of help to you, if it's not in the computer then there's not a damn thing he can do. And there's the disturbing allegation that the quality of drugs you get depends on your cover. Gold Card, silver, bronze etc etc. Gold carders pay a higher premium of course so I guess it makes sense business wise. But should it be business first when someone is sick?The biggest name AAR still charges 100 bob when you visit their clinic. At least in Mombasa that's not a rumor or allegation it's true. And yet you're visiting them because you have a ecidmal cover with them. Do they imagine there are people who have corporate ecidmal covers but personally cannot afford that 100 bob? |
