Takin' Art to the Streets of Beverly Hills

Art dealer and appraiser David W. Streets is set to open his own gallery in Beverly Hills next month.

By Amy Sommer  |  May 29, 2009

With clients ranging from President and Mrs. Reagan to Larry Flynt David Streets has seen all parts of the art world. Now, he brings his expertise and years of experience to Beverly Hills at his new gallery, David Streets Beverly Hills Fine Art at 9407 South Santa Monica Blvd.

Opening a fine art gallery in this economy? Huh? Westside Today had to find out if the dapper Mr. Streets was oddly optimistic, brave or – stupid. Streets sides with brave,

'It is a time for the brave to enter the market and position themselves for the rebound of the economy,' Streets said. 'When others are pulling back, the opportunities for me to work with clients who are in the market for art is boundless,' Streets continued as he explained that there is opportunity in every market – if you know where to look.

Art remains one of the more enjoyable ways for families to amass and pass on wealth – you can’t admire a stock certificate on your living room after all. Protecting your works of art – no matter what the medium – through earthquakes both literal and metaphorical is one of the first and most obvious keys to protecting your investment.

'I have a professional museum art installer on my staff who is insured to hang, mount and install all genres of fine art. In our community, this is critical because of the threat of earthquakes,' Streets said, addressing the literal earthquake threat. 'Know the current market value of your art work. The best way to insure this is to have appraisals done every three years. These will come in handy if you have to make a claim to your insurance company – whether this stems from an earthquake or other calamity – or if you are forced to liquidate it because of the other type of earthquake,' Streets advised.

Through good times and bad, Streets urges clients to enjoy art, 'to buy what they like, buy what they want to live with and buy the very best of what they can afford,' Streets said. 'For too long, people have been buying art like lottery tickets...hoping blindly for a winner,' Streets continued. Los Angeles is filled with emerging artists but in order to find one worthy of an investment you need to educate yourself. '...building blue chip investment art collections and building the careers of great talented artists. That is my passion and my joy in my professional and personal life,' said Streets as he smiled and gave me a list of artists to investigate.
