Yvonne Mounsey, director of Santa Monica's Westside Ballet, was honored atthe L.A. County Board of Supervisor’s meeting during the week of November 18th with a scroll, commemorating her lifelong contribution to ballet and her recent 90th birthday. The scroll was presented to Mounsey by 3rd District Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.
Thanking the board, Mounsey said, “I enjoy my work and look forward to continuing. We have a strong outreach program that brings in children to see our annual 'Nutcracker.' Giving children exposure to ballet is what we’re all about.”
Mounsey co-founded Westside Ballet Company and its associated school, the Westside Academy of Dance, in the 1960's, after retiring from NYC Ballet as principal dancer under George Balanchine.
