Santa Monica Family YMCA Seeks Helpers to Make This Summer Special

Continuing its 70 year old plus tradition of serving youth in Santa Monica and environs, the YMCA seeks qualified men and woman, boys and girls to fill positions as day and mountain camp counselors and counselors in training (CITs).

By Amy Sommer  |  February 24, 2011

Great camp counselors love the company of kids, are approachable, friendly, outgoing, and want to make a difference in the world -- and patience... lots and lots of patience. Is this you? Well, are you fun-loving and able to be in that funtastic moment while providing a safe environment and good example for the youth you'll be leading?. I

The Santa Monica Family YMCA is able to provide camping experiences for youth from all economic backgrounds due largely to the generous contributions of time and money from the community, and especially their committed volunteer resident camp staff team.

Counselors must be 18 years or older and able to commit to work 9 weeks during day camp or volunteer 1 to 3 weeks for mountain camp. CITs must be entering the 7th grade for day camp or 10th grade for sleep away camp. CITs are still considered campers themselves but have reduced rates.

During their camp experience they earn community service or volunteer hours, go through team building, leadership training and acquire skills to be a future camp counselor.

All those interested in applying for these tremendously fun and rewarding positions should have a keen interest in serving youth, having fun and making the world a better place. Counselors must have experience working with youth and be CPR and First Aid certified.

This summer marks the grand re-opening of Camp Big Bear, which is owned and operated by the Santa Monica Family YMCA. Being a sleep-away camp counselor is one of the most unique and gratifying volunteer experiences a person can have. This incredible experience will change your life forever as you meet others with similar interest and passion for serving youth, learn and teach new skills, develop an appreciation for the outdoors and reward a child with memories to last a lifetime.

Sleep-away camp runs July 16-23rd.

For more information regarding camp please contact Audrey Meyer-Hollis, Youth & Family Director, at (310) 393-2721, ext.123, email audrey@ymcasm.org, or look online at www.ymcasm.org.
