Teacher’s Strike at Kenter Canyon

June 11, 2008

Teachers Strike

Last Friday, June 6th, teachers and parents from across Los Angeles Unified School District went on strike for an hour to protest the education budget cuts coming from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Under his mandate, LAUSD will be forced to make cuts across the board. Kenter Canyon and Paul Revere Middle School parents stood with our teachers in support of their fight to prevent our schools from losing funding.

As a parent with children in both Paul Revere and Kenter Canyon, I am appalled at the lack of concern, let alone interest, in our local public schools.

As Charter Schools, we receive less monies than other LA Unified schools. We rely heavily on parent support and involvement. I wish that our Governor would pay attention the public schools in his own backyard.  I don’t want my children to be in classes of 40 when they lay off teachers because our politicians overspent and refused to balance the budget.   The amount of kids in schools will not decrease just because the teachers have been removed.

We also have many, many well-off individuals in our neighborhood who could lend a little financial support to our schools, such as funding our music programs, our track program, art programs, sports programs, text books and school supplies, or allowing us to promote a smaller teacher to student ratio by funding additional teachers.

As parents, we believe in our public schools, we believe in our teachers and we believe in our administration. What we can’t believe is that our Brentwood community and our school board council member, Marlene Canter, won’t step up and make these schools the pride of LAUSD.

We need everyone’s help to fight for us and support the efforts to stop the budget cuts by sending letters to our local politicians and letting them know cutting education is not the answer.
