Five-Year Plan to Increase Bicycling as Mode of Transportation

By Paulina Firozi  |  February 15, 2011

A new five year bike plan, proposed by City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, is under discussion. Rosendahl, as head of the Transportation Committee, has put into place the idea of hundreds of miles of bike routes to encourage bike riding throughout the city. Hearings for the proposal began on Wednesday, February 9 at City Hall.
Rosendahl is asking for public input and support for this project. There will be three neighborhood biking networks, called the 707-mile Backbone, the 834-mile Neighborhood Network and the 139-mile Green Network.
The plan also implements what is called the Bicycle Friendly Street that uses signs, pavement markings and traffic diverters to make roads more inviting to both cyclists and pedestrians (and also sensitive to the heavy flow of motor vehicle traffic).
“It’s time we all appreciated cycling,” Rosendahl said in a YouTube video.. “We want it to be safe and enjoyable. We also know it’s extremely healthy when we get out of our cars and get onto our bicycles.”
