The Way to Happiness Foundation Cleans Up Santa Monica Beach

By Merel Remmerswaal  |  July 13, 2009

Volunteers of
Volunteers of

Santa Monica - Volunteers of "The Way to Happiness Foundation" rolled up their sleeves in the blazing sunshine as they ventured to the beach to pick up litter last Saturday. Armed with gloves, they removed 24 bags of rubbish, this way putting into action one of the 21 precepts written down by L. Ron Hubbard in the booklet The Way to Happiness, "Safeguard and improve your environment."

According to the City of Santa Monica, the gigantic amount of trash has been a problem for years and every year as much as 4,000 tons of trash is collected from the Santa Monica Bay Beaches, costing a yearly amount of $541,000 to the community. This was reason enough for 25 young volunteers to put on their "The Way to Happiness" shirts and go into action. No single piece of rubbish was safe from their quick hands and after a couple of hours of intense work the beach looked spick and span again.

The volunteers not only cleaned up the beach, they also distributed over 3, 000 of The Way to Happiness booklets to people on the beach. This booklet is a nonreligious moral code, based on common sense, containing 21 precepts that encourage people of every race, color and creed to improve their own life and the lives of those around them. Humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard wrote it to halt the moral decay of the current society.

"The beach looked disgusting," stated Nick Mouser, one of the organizers of this beach clean up. "I was shocked to see the amount of trash that was left behind on the beach. We even picked up diapers and condoms. But we wanted to do something more than just a big cleaning, so we also gave out booklets to make people more aware of their responsibility in keeping their beach clean. From the positive reactions we got from the public, we can conclude this was very successful!"

The Way to Happiness Foundation was founded in 1984 to put a stop to the social decline of society by restoring trust and honesty around the world. So far, the organization has distributed over 78 million copies of The Way to Happiness in 90 languages in 135 countries.

Lafayette Ronald Hubbard was a quack, a witch doctor selling his brand of science fiction as reality. He was a narcissistic, egomaniacal, paranoid psychotic that believed the root of everyone’s trouble was caused by an evil alien ruler from another galaxy. He went mad thinking that Xenu’s loyal followers had infiltrated his “church”. He spent the last years of his life in hiding, much the same way Howard Hughes did. He died of a stroke. He was not the brilliant man everyone makes him out to be. He was at best a prolific writer and an assiduous typist with a wild imagination. He had the ability and time to write millions of words, publish hundreds of books and plagiarize many of his ideas. Once he began making money with Dianetics, he never looked back. His job from there on was simply to create new material to keep the helpless from leaving. Fortunately, the stress of his psychosis and the persecution of governments, like the U.S., drove him mad and eventually caused his death.

The man was a plague on society and are his writings.

Instead of complaining about Scientology, get off your behinds and do something good for your community. Trash does not choose religions, race, or economy - it's just there. What does Scientology have to do with cleaning up our beaches? I have lived here all my life and went to SM beaches with my friends. The beaches were never pristine like in other places and people were not as aware of the effect we were having on our environment back then, so it's great to see others take responsibility. I advise all the grumblers to do the same and then maybe you'll feel better about yourselves.

The Way to Happiness Foundation is a lying, recruiting arm for Scientology.

Well good on you & on your friends! nothing like a clean beach to enjoy the sunshine & the air. The Way to Happiness booklet is great, easy reading & very good precepts, we not only need to care about our own house, clothes, garden, but also about the environment for others to enjoy it too - that way the planet is really shared. So well done and to the other groups that do similar clean up too! Thanks a lot. Annick from Belgium

The Way to Happiness Foundation International is a division of the Association for Better Living and Education (ABLE) and is a Scientology related entity, a front group/recruiting arm for the church.

Their booklet is nothing more than a rehashed version of the Ten Commandments.

"MAKE MONEY. MAKE MORE MONEY. MAKE OTHER PEOPLE PRODUCE SO AS TO MAKE MORE MONEY."

- L. Ron Hubbard, Hubbard Communications Office Policy Letter, 9 March 1972, MS OEC 384

Well done to a wonderfull group of people who took it upon themselves to do this clean up. The critics are sad bunch. They only show their bigotry. If a Cathloic or Jewish group of people does a clean up then it is acceptable, but if a group of people who are handing out The Way to Hapiness books which was written by L. Ron Hubbard do it then it is no longer an acceptible clean up and needs to be suspect. Very sad people have this kind of thinking. Perhaps you should try reading The Way to Happiness and they may become happier.

"we also gave out booklets to make people more aware of their responsibility in keeping their beach clean"

That's a lie. Those booklets are all about LRONmentalism not ENVIRONmentalism. Not a word in them re beach cleanup. Total junk. Article is shill for a stupid cult that rapes people for money and breaks up families. Nobody wants you you crazy idiots. Hope next time you decide to go to the beach you all get swept away.

The Way to Happiness Foundation is one of many front groups for the so-called Church of Scientology. This should have been made clear in the story because recruitment drives for cults take many guises.

Awesome! I wish more groups like this would clean up the beach! I have done beach clean ups with Surfrider Fdn and it really wakes you up as to how thoughtless some people can be. Great job!
