This article is to educate the Brentwood News reader as to the urgent care of the Coral Trees that line the median on San Vicente.
Brought here from South Africa, they replaced the Red Line Train that previously ran down San Vicente. We, as community, cherish them and they, in turn, define Brentwood. They have been given a Historical Designation, and named the Official Tree of Los Angeles.
They are beautiful and fragile. They need annual care and special water regulation or their limbs become too full, break and destroy their sculptured shape. Surprise, surprise...the City of Los Angeles, due to budget cuts, has removed them from the pruning schedule. They may be cared for once every 7
In recent weeks several Coral Trees on San Vicente lost branches. The heavy rains of winter probably made the branches heavier than normal, and they began to split off. Regular trimming is required.

years...maybe.
30 years ago, a group of residents started a campaign to share in the expense with the City to provide for proper trimming of the Coral Trees. Now that there is NO money allocated from the City, it is once again necessary to raise funds. The goal would be to raise enough money to have yearly interest provide the funds for the trimming. It is a big undertaking, but hopefully we can make an endowment so that this will not have to be done again in another 30 years.
Brentwood is a caring community, we spend much time in the proximity of the Coral Trees, and now, we must step up to the plate to assure that they continue to flourish.
NEWSFLASH: The citizens of Brentwood are hearing the call and just raised $25,000 for emergency trimming of the coral trees. You might have noticed all the trucks and workmen in recent days.
But this will be an ongoing project. Please donate and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same. The Brentwood Community Council and Brentwood Park Property Owners’ have taken on the responsibility for the campaign. Log on to brentwoodcommunitycouncil.org and press “DONATE.”
