Big Mudslide in Mandeville Canyon
By Brentwood News December 2011 | December 17, 2011
A landslide blocked the entire street at 1877 Westridge Road Nov. 19. Palisades Patrol was on scene with LAFD helping to redirect traffic to alternate routes for access in and out of the hilltop community. Senior Lead Officer Eric Fine was at the road closure of Westridge Road and Westridge Terrace explaining to residents how to use Chalon Road to exit the canyon. About 20 homes are inside the road closure area. Cause of the slide appears to have been a broken irrigation pipe from a lot off of Hilltop Way. The slide brought down mud and trees across the narrow two lane roadway.
“Incidents such as these really illustrate the need for residents in hillside communities to explore their neighborhood and get familiar with alternate access routes.” commented Scott Wagenseller of Palisades Patrol. “If this road closure happened during a brush fire, it could be catastrophic for drivers trapped on this narrow road with approaching flames. People and firefighters have been killed in their vehicles unable to escape fast moving fires. And hilltop roads are the worst place to be in a fire.”
