Cal Vet: Serving those who Served Their Country

The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CDVA), is charged with serving our state's approximately 2.1 million veterans. Their latest, local effort to fulfill this mandate is the California Veterans Home, West Los Angeles (CVH-LA).

By Amy Sommer  |  December 22, 2010

The opening of the CVH-LA in June was heralded by many, including Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and other local and national dignitaries. After a summer of licensing, applicant review, licensing and training, honorably discharged veterans started to move into the 396 bed facility this fall.

I had the opportunity to take a tour of the facility recently and it was exquisite. While residents do have to share rooms, there is plenty of space and privacy for each resident. The $253 million facility (funded by CDVA in partnership with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, its national counterpart) offers residents many gathering spots, a spacious indoor/outdoor dining room and many levels of care for its disabled and aging residents.

This is the fourth home that CDVA has built; there are homes in Yountville, CHula Vista and Barstow with plans to build two more similar facilities in Fresno and Redding.

For more information on the home and how to apply for residency:
www.calvet.ca.gov or call the admissions office at 424-832-8202.
