SMBRC CHAIR APPOINTED TO CALIFORNIA COASTAL COMMISSION The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission’s Chair, Richard Bloom, was appointed to the California Coastal Commission on December 8th. Bloom, former mayor and current city council member for the City of Santa Monica, was appointed by the California State Senate Rules Committee as its South Coast Representative.

"I am gratified by the confidence that Senator Darrell Steinberg and the Senate Rules Committee has shown in my ability to make decisions that will protect and enhance our irreplaceable 1100 mile California coastline,” said Bloom. “My experience on the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission has helped prepare me for this important new responsibility. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead."

Shelley Luce, Executive Director of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission, said of the appointment, “This is great news for California’s coastal resources. Richard Bloom’s commitment to the sustainable use of our coastline is genuine, and is backed by years of experience and knowledge of the issues. We are very pleased that he will serve as a Coastal Commissioner.”

Bloom’s Coastal Commission term runs until approximately May 2013. While he has served as the Bay Restoration Commission’s chair for the past two years, Bloom expects to continue serving with the Commission, in addition to his Coastal Commission duties.

Established by legislation in 2002, the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission is a non-regulatory, locally-based state entity whose mission is to restore and enhance the Santa Monica Bay through actions and partnerships that improve water quality, conserve and rehabilitate natural resources, and protect the bay’s benefits and values. Its 35-member Governing Board is comprised of federal, state and local elected officials, heads of agency, and private sector business and environmental interests. To date, the Bay Restoration Commission has funded over $35 million in projects to restore the Santa Monica Bay Watershed.
