St. Martin of Tours Wins State Science Fair Awards

County Science Fair winners from St. Martin of Tours School in Brentwood made a fine showing at the 57th Annual California State Science Fair, held at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on May 19-20. 

Eighth grader, Alexandra Reale, won fourth place in the Behavioral Sciences category, and also received a special award from the UCLA Brain Research Institute for her project, “Under the Surface: Priming the Subconscious Brain.”  Eighth grader, Catherine Haber, won an Honorable Mention in Behavioral Sciences for “Blonde Today, Brunette Tomorrow II: Is the Stereotype of Dumb Blondes Universal?”  Sixth grader, Thomas Yaeger, won an Honorable Mention in Chemistry for “Electrolyte Madness.”  He also won a Science Buddies Clever Scientist Award for using innovative, low-cost, experimental techniques to answer interesting scientific questions.

At the Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair held April 16-18, seven St. Martin of Tours students were honored at the Los Angeles Convention Center.  Alexandra Reale and Thomas Yaeger won first place In Behavioral Sciences and Applied Chemistry, respectively.  Caroline Frost won second place in Ecology with “Fighting Wildfires: It’s an Uphill Battle,” and also received the Darrell Smedley Award for the science project that most represents the idea of “I Did It Myself.”  Seventh grader, Faith Bryer-Ash, won second place in Behavioral Sciences with “Third Headlight is No Fifth Wheel.”  Catherine Haber won third place in Behavioral Sciences. Honorable Mention awards were presented to two Sixth-graders, Christopher Alexander for “Say What?  Do You Know That Listening to Your iPod Can Make You Deaf?” and Janelle Lew for “Bottled vs. Tap: Believe the Hype?”  Additionally, Ms. Lew won a special award from the Metropolitan Water District.
