Skirball Bridge Demolition and Reconstruction

The Skirball Bridge will undergo demolition and reconstruction. The first phase of construction will entail the demolition and reconstruction of the north side of the bridge first, leaving the south side in place to maintain access and traffic in each direction.

By Jeffrey S. Hall  |  August 04, 2010

Construction yard set-up and early preparation: Early August, day & night work hours. Will begin to stage and set-up the construction work zone and yard near the Skirball Bridge. Additional early preparation work will be conducted until the date
of bridge demolition.

Traffic reconfiguration: Mid August, night time work hours. Will re-stripe traffic lanes and relocate traffic signals and signs to maintain traffic in each direction on the bridge during construction. Concrete barriers will be placed in the middle of the bridge to separate traffic from the work zone. Only late night closures.

Bridge demolition: Mid October, night time work hours. The north side of the bridge will be demolished in sections during the late night hours over seven nights.

Bridge reconstruction: Late Oct. 10– May 11, day & night work hours. The north side of Skirball Bridge will undergo reconstruction for approximately seven months.

What to expect from the construction work activities:

• The Skirball Bridge will remain open during reconstruction with two lanes of traffic in the westbound direction and one lane of traffic in the eastbound direction.
• During demolition, there will be bridge, freeway, and ramp closures during the late night hours.
• Bridge reconstruction and early preparation work will entail some bridge, freeway, and ramp closures as well. There will be approved traffic detour routes to direct traffic during closures.
• Bridge and freeway closures will be coordinated with emergency responders.
• The southbound off-ramp will be reduced to one lane to support the bridge construction.
• The south side of the bridge will be demolished and reconstructed after the north side is complete.
• The southbound on-ramp will be relocated to the south of Skirball Bridge and will begin construction in the fall of 2010. The new southbound on-ramp is anticipated to be completed in May of 2011.
