“Subway to the Sea” Inches Along
By Brentwood News July 15 2011 Issue | July 19, 2011
The Westside Subway Extension was recently selected as one of eight projects nationwide to advance to the US Dept. of Transportation’s final approval process.
The project, if approved, will extend the MTA’s purple line from Western Avenue to a station at the VA property, on the edge of Brentwood.
Current thinking calls for local transportation authorities to borrow money from the federal government to complete the project on an accelerated basis, then using Measure R sales tax money (approved by voters in 2008) to repay the loan.
The project is estimated to cost $5.2 billion. A $641 million loan from the federal government would get this process started.
