Traveling for the holidays?
By Karl Susman | December 10, 2011
I love traveling just as much as I despise it. Oh believe me, these two emotions are not mutually exclusive. It's terrific to be able to see so many different places, different cultures and foods. I happen to be someone that even takes note of differences in cellular phone coverage. It's amazing to visit some places that are so different from what I'm used . . . it's like going back in time to another world that doesn't resemble mine. It's always a relief to get back into my own comfy bed when I'm done visiting.
Packing for traveling is akin to trying to forsee your future and preparing for any and every contingency that life may bring. How can I possibly predict everything I may need in the next ten days of my life? Ten days away from my home while trying to maintain at least some of my usual home-life activities. Good luck with that one, Karl. Inevitably I'll cram two bags full of electronics and batteries, cameras, computers and any other of my "comfort items." I prudently leave the clothing nightmare part of packing to my wife. Thank goodness for her.
Airplane Travel just never seems to get easier. Back in the day, your friends and family could walk you right up to the gate. Hey, I remember walking onto the plane to strap my grandmother in before saying goodbye. Try that today! Non-ticketed passengers are given the boot by airport security pretty much once you hit the ticketing windows. I'm on my own, just me again the big machines now. Now to pick a line for security, should I go with the short line that has a family of four, or the longer line with six business men? I never seem to get that gamble right. No matter what, I stress out in these places. It's just in my DNA. I'm a worrier.
Hotel Check-ins always annoy me. I would love to have, just one time, an arrival at a hotel where my room is ready. They are so quick to make sure you are gone by noon because the have to prepare the rooms for new guests, yet when I arrive as a new guest there are mysteriously no rooms ready. I have to take many deeps breaths not to go Michael Douglas in Falling Down on them.
What you're dong while away means the least. Add up your travel time, from packing, cabbing, airplaning, hotel check-ins, both to and on your return, and you realize more time is spent in preparation than anything else you do there. There must be a better way, no?
