HIPPIEFEST 2011: Retro Festival Rocks the Greek

Featuring some of the biggest names of the sixties and seventies...

By John Barsky  |  August 09, 2011

Hippiefest was very good this year at the Greek. There was a shortcoming with the sound system as the volume needed to be tweaked a few notches but the acts were great.

Felix Cavaliere brought back the great sound of the Rascals from the 1960's.

Rick Derringer was very good but it felt a bit Las Vegas like with his haircut and clothes.

Gary Wright was excellent and did many of his hits including "Dream Weaver". He also came out to jam with other musicians including Rick Derringer and Mark Farner.

Mark Farner, formally of Grand Funk Railroad, moved around the stage and played with the energy of a 20 year old.

The same house band backed all the musicians except for Dave Mason who brought out his own band for the show.

With a wild crowd of aging and young hippies, the main message of the show was peace, happiness and of course music from an era that seems to never die in the hearts and minds of all peace loving souls.
